2018 PEROLD /ABSA CAPE BLEND TOP 5 WINNERS ANNOUNCED
We are very proud to announce that Leipzig Winery's 2017 Master Blend is one of the Top 5 winners for the 2018 Perold/ Absa Cape Blend competition!
It is the youngest wine out of the Top 5. This wine combines the best flavours of hand-picked Pinotage, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc & Petit Verdot.
This fusion creates cherry notes coupled with spice on the nose with a lingering, fruity aftertaste. Raspberries and Strawberry flavours abound on the palate of the wine.
ABOUT THE COMPETITION:
Establishing a strong identity for the "Cape Blend" wine style, took a giant leap through the initial Perold Absa Cape Blend Competition, probably a historic moment in the involvement of the local industry, with the awards function appropriately taking place in the shadow of the landmark KWV facade on Paarl's main street.
Ever since the early 1930's the debate has been raging about the composition of a truly 'representative' world-winning Cape Blend. The consensus seems to have been all along that a red blend with a distinctive South African personality, plenty of character, balance, appeal over a wide spectrum and good ageing potential, would go a long way to complete the 'Brand South Africa' offering.
The rules of the competition stated that 30% of the blend, but not more that 70% had to be Pinotage.
Beyers Truter added that we already know that Pinotage stands eye-to-eye to any wine in the world, but these Cape Blends are again clear evidence that Pinotage blends do not have to stand back to their peers in other countries. These wines are truly unique jewels in the crown of the South African wine industry.
The competition is presented by the Pinotage Association and Absa and reflects the long standing commitment from Absa not only to Pinotage but to the South African wine industry as a whole.
The judges: Jacques Roux (marketing director of DGB), Fred Viljoen and Johan Malan (proprietors and cellarmasters at Viljoensdrift and Simonsig respectively), Susan Erasmus (Laffort), Brad Gold (CWM) and legendary winemaker Guy Webber.
The quality of the finalist wines is a testament to the fact that South African winemakers have embraced the wine style and committed to create truly South African blends of exceptional quality and uniqueness that can stand out on the world stage.
The entries are always from a wide array of South African wine regions in numerous styles and blend combinations, and this year was no exception.
Worcester Wine Route heartily congratulates Vian Bester and his winemaking team from Leipzig Country House for reaching the Top 5 in the Perold ABSA Cape Blend 2018 Challenge.
